Kauai Couples Photography

I’m loving these salty sessions! At the end of your shoot, we get in the ocean and play in the waves. Before we dive in, I talk you through what we’ll be doing—how I’ll compose the shot and what the moment is all about. Then I remind you to simply remember: you’re on vacation with your new bride in Hawaii, on one of the most magical, beautiful islands in the world.

As I write this, I’m wondering about your love story—some ideas are worth writing down. But for now, how about an old Hawaiian legend?

The Legend of the Naupaka Lovers

There’s a unique flower in Kauai called Naupaka that grows only in Hawaii and nowhere else in the world. What makes this flower special is its appearance—it looks like half a flower, with missing petals. Interestingly, this shrub grows in two very different environments: in the mountains and near the beach. How can one half-flower thrive in both places? Because there’s a legend behind it.

The legend says that at the base of Makana Mountain, near Kauai’s North Shore, there was an old and prestigious hula school for boys and girls. Students were expected to obey very strict rules—no dating allowed. But two students, Nau and Paka, fell in love. They met only in secret, hiding their feelings as best they could.

One night, the head of the school, Kilioe, heard splashes from someone crossing the stream behind her house. She followed the sound and discovered, to her surprise and fury, that Nau and Paka were together. The two lovers began running for their lives, knowing their punishment was death.

Kilioe chased after them, demanding they stop, but they kept running. Nau told Paka to hide in a cave near the beach while he ran up the mountain to divert Kilioe’s attention. But Paka, fearing for her lover’s life, stepped out of the cave to block Kilioe’s path—and was killed on the spot. Blinded by rage, Kilioe continued after Nau, catching him high on the mountain and killing him too. (Some strong old wahine, that Kilioe!)

The next morning, people living nearby noticed a new plant growing from the sand where Paka died—a beautiful shrub with flowers that had only half their petals. That same flower appeared in the mountains where Nau died. The half-flowers are a reminder that the two lovers are forever separated. Legend says that when you place the two halves together, forming a complete circle, the lovers can be reunited.

FAQ Section

What makes Hanalei special for couples photography?

Hanalei, on Kauai’s North Shore, offers a rare mix of wide beaches, dramatic mountains, and soft natural light. The energy is calm and romantic, making it ideal for couples who want photos that feel real, grounded, and unforced.

Do couples actually get in the ocean during Hanalei sessions?

They can—and many do. Salty sessions often end in the water, playing in the waves. Before that happens, everything is explained clearly so couples feel comfortable and present, not surprised or rushed.

Is Hanalei good for honeymoon couples photography?

Yes. Hanalei is especially popular for honeymoon sessions because it feels intimate without being isolated. It’s perfect for couples who want to document new love in a place that already carries meaning and magic.

What time of day is best for couples photos in Hanalei?

Sunrise and the hour before sunset offer the best light and the fewest people. These times create a quieter, more emotional atmosphere—ideal for couples photography focused on connection.

What should we wear for a Hanalei couples session?

Neutral tones, soft whites, and earth colors photograph best. Lightweight fabrics that move easily work well, especially if you plan to walk the shoreline or step into the water.

What is the Naupaka lovers legend in Hawaii?

The Naupaka legend tells of two lovers separated by fate—one dying near the mountains, the other by the sea. The half-flower that grows in both places symbolizes love divided, yet forever connected.

Can storytelling or Hawaiian legend be part of our session?

Yes. Story-driven couples sessions can subtly reflect place, myth, and emotion without being staged. It’s about honoring the island while documenting your real connection.
