Hanalei Bay is one of those places that gives us room to create more than a traditional family portrait. The mountains, waterfalls, open beach, changing clouds, and evening light make every session here a little different.
I photograph families in a way that feels natural while still paying attention to the details that make a photograph beautiful. I’ll give you direction when you need it, but I also leave space for your family to move, play, laugh, and simply be together.
The goal isn’t to make every photograph perfectly posed.

A Hanalei Bay Family Photo Session
Hanalei Bay gives us an incredible amount of variety without having to travel from location to location.
We can photograph your family along the water, beneath the palms, against the mountains, and with the waterfalls that often appear after North Shore rain. As the light changes, the entire look of the beach changes with it.
Some photographs will be everyone together. Some will be quiet portraits. There will be movement, bare feet, kids running through the water, parents with their children, siblings together, and all the little combinations that become more important as the years go by.
I don’t want to give you 50 versions of the same photograph.
I want to create a collection that tells the story of your family.

One of my favorite things about family photography is knowing that these images eventually become part of a family’s history.
The photograph you take with your parents today may someday be the photograph your children show their own children.
That is why I especially love photographing multi-generational families on Kauai — grandparents with grandchildren, adult siblings together again, cousins growing up together, and the entire family in one place.

What to Wear for Family Photos at Hanalei Bay
You don’t need everyone to match.
Instead, choose clothing that works together. Neutral colors, soft earth tones, natural fabrics, and subtle patterns photograph beautifully against Hanalei’s greens, blues, sand, and mountains.
Flowy dresses and skirts also work especially well here because there is often movement in the North Shore breeze.
Most importantly, choose clothing you can comfortably move in. Your session may include walking through sand, sitting together, playing with your children, and getting your feet wet.
When Is the Best Time for Photos at Hanalei Bay?
The light at Hanalei Bay changes dramatically throughout the year, so I plan each session around the season, weather, tides, and the kind of photographs we’re trying to create.
Kauai weather also moves quickly. A little North Shore rain doesn’t automatically mean we have to cancel. Some of my favorite conditions happen when rain moves through the mountains and leaves us with dramatic clouds, waterfalls, and beautiful soft light.
We’ll make the final plan based on what Kauai gives us that day.
